Gift Exchange Likes/Dislikes List
I saw someone else do this and thought it might be a good idea. This post is basically just information about what I do and don't like when it comes to fan fiction and is a guide for anyone who is planning to write me a fic, for an official exchange or otherwise. Please ignore it if you are not interested. The only reason I'm not post-dating it is that some people on my flist might actually care! And who knows, maybe you share some of my kinks/squicks and never knew it and now we'll bond over them and be all BFF. Or maybe you'll decide you hate me and want to remove me from your flist.

My main fandoms are Harry Potter, Prince of Tennis, and The Breakfast Club, but I have dabbled in other fandoms as well. My favorite films, books, and TV shows are listed on my profile.

General Likes

Sex stuff: kissing; blow jobs; chair!sex; straddling (guh); grinding; frotting; nuzzling of hair and necks and stomachs and crotches and basically anywhere; half-clothed sex; mild dirty talk (but please no "who's your daddy?" dialogue, calling each other dirty names like "slut" or "whore", or making people beg too much - basically, I like passionate babbling and talking about what they want, with some cursing thrown in); imperfect, realistic, awkward and/or messy sex; accidental premature ejaculations; desperate, impatient sex; in a threesome, when one person is simultaneously penetrated and given oral, and when the penetrator can feel the oral ministrations; sex with an Animagus in animal form (mostly prefer oral in this case). I also love oral, the filthier the better - felching, rimming, blowjobs, face fucking, spread legs, straddling the other person's chest/face, ball licking, fingers in the hair, coming in the mouth, etc. Other than a few random kinks, I'm pretty vanilla in my tastes.

General: slash and friendship; messy, complicated relationships; action/suspense; sarcasm; angst; secret/semi-secret relationships; relationships based on sex but becoming emotional with time; conflict coming from within the relationship; relationships based on friendship; the complication of mixing friendship and sex; boys acting like boys; open or bittersweet endings (basically, I like all kinds of endings - happy and non-happy endings are both fine, as are character deaths); AU; first time/beginning of relationship; fics that span a great length of time; fics with meaty plots; fics with lots of sex.

General Dislikes/Squicks:

Sex stuff: Mostly the usual suspects: watersports, scat, breathplay, M-preg, necrophilia, non- or dub-con, cross-dressing, BDSM, torture as a kink, biting, needles or piercings, blood, SOUNDING D:. I am fairly vanilla in my tastes. I wouldn't be opposed to fisting or DP if it's not too descriptive, in a squicky way.

General: extreme angst relating to suicide, self-mutilation, depression, rape, or abuse when it is used as a convenient plot device, especially to bring a couple together (if you want to explore the topic on its own, realistically, and not as a means to an end, then that's fine); extreme soppy fluff; character bashing (even of characters I don't care for); ANY non-canon nicknames (unless spoken in jest); anyone calling anyone else "baby" unless there is an actual infant involved, or "my/his boy" unless they are referring to their son; infidelity; group sex (unless it's Trio or a listed OT3, in which case you should feel very free...actually, there are a lot of exceptions to this one, but generally I don't look for orgy fics); biting; anything too public or domestic (like weddings, PDA while onlookers coo, etc.); when a bomb like incest is dropped unexpectantly in the middle of an otherwise vanilla fic.

Harry Potter Likes

General: close Trio interaction and friendship where they are heavily involved in each other's lives (or angst about her not being in their lives anymore...she doesn't have to be part of the plot, just don't ship her off unnecessarily to get her out of the way); appearances from Neville and/or Luna (I love the Harry/Luna friendship); DH compliance, but not the epilogue, unless you want to go the angst route; conflicted!Hermione; moody!Harry; confused!Harry; confused!Ron; conflicted!Sirius; Padfoot!Sirius; war or post-war; AU.

Pairings: Harry/Ron, Harry/Teddy, Harry/Sirius, Remus/Sirius, Harry/George, Harry/Oliver, Trio (Harry/Ron/Hermione), Harry/Ron/Luna, Seamus/Dean, Gryffindor boy/Gryffindor boy, Harry/Luna, any combination of Hermione/Ginny/Pansy, Rita/Ginny, Rita/Hermione, Rita/anyone really, Kingsley/anyone, George/Luna. There are probably more. Slash, femslash, cross-gen, and incest all good!

Characters: Harry, Luna, Ron, Hermione, Rita, Kingsley, George, Pansy, etc.

Harry/Ron: I like a lot of things here. Really fluffy Harry/Ron makes me cringe, although I'm a hypocrite because I've written it that way. I really love the grey areas and the complications of adding love or sex to friendship. Unrequited feels so real to me, especially with Harry in love and Ron apologetically straight. I also love the idea of this rocky, complicated transition into romance, maybe feeling attracted to one another but a bit weirded out by it. (And not just "But I can't jeopordize the friendship!!1!" but actually weirded out and conflicted when they look at each other.) Or fucking around together and not knowing exactly what it means and feeling confused. Complicated emotions, basically! I love keeping the best friends aspect of their relationship intact no matter what, so that it defines their relationship more than romantic love and sex.
Harry/Ron/Hermione: I love it when this OT3 gets messy. I'm a big Harry/Ron fan, so any emphasis on that part of the triangle is lovely. I get really sad when Harry gets shoved to the side to make way for Ron/Hermione. :( Harry/Hermione does not squick me, so go for it.
Harry/Sirius: I like keeping the taboo nature of their relationship intact and prefer not to gloss over the godfather/godson, best friend's son, or cross-gen aspects. I also like a lot of mention of James Sr. in Harry/Sirius fics. Also, I usually prefer Harry to be at least 16, which obviously means AU. If not, then something taking place during book five so that he's 15.
Harry/Luna: I love their friendship and spiritual/emotional connection, and I love that she gets him in a way that no one else does. I sometimes have a hard time believing H/L romance, preferring the wistful friendship they share, but I'm up for it if you want to give it a go!
Rita/anyone: With Rita, it is all about the power play. I think she would use sex to get what she wants.

Harry Potter Dislikes/Squicks

General: the epilogue; omniscient or matchmaker Hermione/Ginny/Mrs. Weasley (or anyone, really); Harry using a time turner to visit the Marauders.

Characters/Pairings: Harry/Ginny, Harry/Cho, Remus/Tonks.

Breakfast Club Likes

Pairings (in loose order of preference): Andy/Brian, Andy/Allison, Allison/Claire, John/Brian. I would also enjoy Brian/Claire, John/Claire or John/Andy.

Characters: Brian, Andy, John, Carl

General: friendship between the boys; diverse, realistically written parents and friends; assholes and nice people in all levels of the high school population; college/early 20's fics; fics exploring family ties; fics where any of them do something unexpected after high school (e.g. get interesting jobs, travel, go to school); fics exploring Brian or Andy (or even Claire) being unsuccessful in college or their adult lives.

Breakfast Club Dislikes/Squicks

Pairings/characters: I don't have any squick pairings (except maybe anyone with Vernon), but if you don't see it listed above then it probably doesn't interest me much. I like all of the characters besides Vernon, although I have enjoyed some Vernon gen fic in the past. But mainly the five teenagers and Carl are the ones I'm interested in.

General: one-dimensional parents and friends; any of the characters turning a complete 180 after detention; fics where the jocks/cheerleaders/cool kids are all complete assholes who make fun of Brian/John/Allison for no reason whatsoever; fics where all of Brian's friends are all completely geeky/ugly/uncool/socially inept/sci-fi or fantasy obsessed/good at school/smart/bad dressers; fics where the entire school notices this strange new group of five friends and decides to tear them down or shun them; fics where the BC bands together against the entire school.

There are exceptions to every "rule" listed above, and I have read many fics that employ some of my squicks as story elements. (So if you are reading this and have ever written a fic using my squicks, then please don't be offended or think that I was lying if I commented and said I liked it - I wasn't lying, I promise!) This is just a rough guide, to be taken with a grain or salt and a lot of flexibility.

If you have any questions, [info]shes_gone  and [info]aunt_agatha  both know my Harry Potter likes/dislikes really well. For Breakfast Club,[info]twbasketcase  knows every single little thing there is to know about what I like and don't like, probably even better than I do, actually.

Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) I'm pretty sure I was aware of most of this stuff XDDD Namely the BC; although I wasn't aware that you had grown a liking for John/Andy.

Don't like infidelity, huh? Well that would explain you not being into my fic XDDD But once again, that doesn't surprise me. ;D

I will keep this in mind when I ever get around to finishing your Andy/Brian and your Sylar/Peter for you :D

Heh, Andy/John. I don't know, I just like most slash and when it's done well I think John/Andy is really interesting. But it's more of a side pairing. You know better than anyone where my true heart lies. :)

Haha, I remember the review I left you for that chapter of your fic. Something like, "OMG *cries* I am freaking out and can't review properly right now! klahfdskjfh!!!11" LOL, I still feel bad about that! But like I said, it's not that I didn't like the fic - infidelity just rubs me the wrong way most of the time and leaves me feeling kind of depressed and sick to my stomach. :(

*waits patiently for yummy slash fics*

Yeah I figured that was why XDDD Yeah, I definitely know where your true love lies :D

You were so sad! I felt bad kinda *dies* But I agree, I'm usually not a fan of it either. It has to be done right or I can't stand it.

OMG, I was sad for like a whole week after I read that! *is lame* But you should take it as a compliment; most fics don't affect me that much. :)

(Although, when it comes to TBC, I actually wouldn't mind as much if one of them cheated with another member of the club. Like, if Allison cheated with John or something. I'm not saying I'd like it, but it wouldn't be quite as painful.)

It's okay, I promised you that John/Allison fic ages ago and I have not even started it. :( But right now I am writing established!John/Brian at their HS reunion.

*dies* I am so sorry XD Yeah I'm not so against them cheating with another canon character either -- especially since most of my TBC ships are fanon.

Oh really? TBC seems so long ago *dies* I think there were SO many fics I was supposed to write and finish and I just never got around to it.

Besides Andy/Brian I still don't know how warm I am to the idea of TBC slash. I dunno. But if you wrote it I would definitely read because I know it would be good :D

Fucking TBC. Yeah, I tend to go the fanon route in fan fiction, in TBC and other fandoms. The original writers just didn't know what the characters really wanted or that Brian and Andy would want to have lots of sex and live happily ever after. ;)

Besides Andy/Brian I still don't know how warm I am to the idea of TBC slash.

Um, would that have anything to do with you refusing to believe that Bender is gay? :p

I love how we never have anything new to say in our comments about likes/dislikes because we've had the same conversations 300 times.

You are a nerd, and I love you for it.

On a related note: I fail at established!Brian/John, and at high school reunions. *gives up*

Meh, I don't have enough time anyway, and I don't want to give them something that sucks (well, in a bad way :p). Maybe I'll try to finish/post it later.

Earth tones work for me. I like blues and greens, personally.

I'm pretty sure I've crossed the line into your 'dislike' territory with a bunch of these.

angsty plot devices like suicide

And I pointed you towards my ficlet Together?

Oops.

Oh, no. See, this is where it gets all tricky, because like I said, I've really liked some fics that deal with some of the "dislikes" I have listed. The thing is, suicide is a sensitive subject for me, so I can't read it unless it's treated with sensitivity. In my previous fandom (and in HP, because HP has every story imaginable and then a thousand more) I saw a lot of fics about suicide where the author clearly had no idea what would drive a person to consider it, and was sometimes using it as a way to garner sympathy for the character or bring a couple together. That's the kind of thing that I can't read, not suicide in general.

And I can honestly say that I've never been squicked by anything in your fics. :) I really liked the one you just mentioned.

And of course I hid this part in the Breakfast Club dislike section, but I intended it for all fics:

extreme angst relating to suicide, self-mutilation, depression, rape, or abuse when it is used as a convenient plot device, especially to bring a couple together (if you want to explore the topic on its own and not as a means to an end, then I would really like that actually)

I guess I should fix that!

One of my strongest turn offs is: "Character A is raped/almost raped, Character B turns up and saves them somehow and enacts retribution on evil villain, Character B uses sex to somehow heal A, and they live happily ever after."

Just about anyone who has lived through sexual assault would be offended by the way fanfiction (and even some printed fiction) seems to use rape as a plot device to introduce a love interest.

I don't have a problem with people putting rape as an element in a story. But for goodness sake, people, if you're going to do it, show realistic emotional fallout.

Oh man, I have had this conversation with other writers before and I agree. It's not about including rape or suicide in a fic, but about why it's included and how it's written. Word on the emotional fall-out, which sometimes doesn't get its due.

And that's my problem with suicide/depression as well. In lots of stories, an attempted suicide is used to make another character (or the reader) feel sorry for the suicidal character, or to fall in love with them and save them from their suicidal thoughts. I could rant about this for days, but I'll try to contain myself. Basically, I think that's a romanticized idea that has virtually nothing to do with real life or actual people dealing with actual emotions.
